Inmates' Inter-Institutional Chess Championship
2026-02-21Through the long-standing cooperation between the Chess Academy of Armenia and the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, an inter-institutional chess championship was organized at the Armavir Penitentiary Institution of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia. The tournament brought together inmates from the penitentiary institutions of Artik, Armavir, Sevan, Nubarashen, Vanadzor, and Vardashen.
Among those present at the event were the Deputy Head of the Penitentiary Service, Vahe Nanushyan, the Founder and Director of the Chess Academy, Smbat Lputian, and representatives of the Service’s central administration.
The tournament was officiated by Academy arbiter Vahe Poghosyan.
Based on the results of the competition, the best participants will form the Armenian National Prisoners’ Chess Team, which will represent the country in international chess tournaments for inmates.
Over the past year, the Armenian National Prisoners’ Chess Team has achieved notable success, securing 2nd place in the Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Inmates and 5th place in the World Online Championship.
